Asahikawa, Biei and Furano: Exploring Hokkaido’s Inland and Mountain Regions
September 17, 2026

Asahikawa Airport introduces a travel area with several different rhythms: city time in Asahikawa, farm landscapes around Biei and Furano, and mountain stays around Daisetsuzan. Choose which rhythm should lead the holiday before collecting sightseeing stops.
Getting from Asahikawa Airport — Transport Information
Asahikawa Airport sits between Asahikawa and Biei, so you can head either to the city or straight into the countryside. There is no rail station at the airport; all public transport leaves from the bus stops outside the terminal.

Connection details
- Airport bus to Asahikawa Station: This bus runs on flight days to match arrivals and departures. Buy tickets from the machine in the domestic arrivals lobby. The operator states that nationwide IC cards such as Suica are not accepted on its buses, so carry cash or a ticket.
- Biei and Furano: The Lavender bus is a regular route bus that also calls at the airport. Seats cannot be reserved, and it is not timed to flights, so check the next departure before you collect your bags. From Asahikawa Station, JR local trains on the Furano Line are another option for Biei and Furano.
- Asahidake: The Ideyu-go starts in central Asahikawa and stops at the airport on the way to Asahidake. It is not timed to flights either. Check the ropeway and weather before committing to a day in the mountains.
- Asahiyama Zoo: A direct bus runs from the airport to the zoo in about 35 minutes, but only during the zoo's summer season, on weekends and holidays (daily in late July to mid-August).
- Sounkyo: There is no Sounkyo bus from the airport. From Asahikawa Station, Dohoku Bus runs to Sounkyo. By rail you can only go as far as Kamikawa; there is no railway from Kamikawa to Sounkyo, so continue by bus or taxi. Dohoku Bus timetables changed in July 2026, so use the current one.
Public transport or a rental car?
Asahikawa, central Biei and Furano are reachable by bus and train. Biei's hills and the flower farms around Furano are spread out, and a car makes it much easier to reach several viewpoints in a day. If you drive, use designated parking: Biei's fields are private working farmland.
Winter travel
Snow and ice affect driving on the open countryside roads around Biei and Furano, and visibility can drop quickly. If you are not used to winter driving, use buses and trains and join an organised tour for the scenic spots. Check that mountain transport at Asahidake is operating before setting out.
Check current fares, timetables and operating seasons before traveling.

Quick Overview
- Asahikawa: A city base, with Asahiyama Zoo as a distinct outing.
- Biei: Agricultural hills and carefully chosen viewpoints.
- Furano: Countryside stays and seasonal flower landscapes in the wider area.
- Daisetsuzan: Mountain scenery, with Asahidake and Sounkyo representing different bases.
Understanding the Area
This is a planning area, not a single resort. Biei and Furano have dispersed sights, while Daisetsuzan is a mountain region rather than one attraction. Asahidake and Sounkyo should not be treated as interchangeable accommodation locations. Pick the landscape and activity first, then choose a base that fits it.
Main Places to Visit
Asahikawa
Use city time for meals and a less weather-dependent part of the stay. If Asahiyama Zoo is a priority, reserve a substantial block for it and check the zoo's own calendar. It is a destination in its own right, not a quick stop to insert between every countryside outing. Official reference
Biei and Furano
Give the hills and fields a selective itinerary: fewer places with time to appreciate them often work better than a long photograph list. Biei's fields are working private farmland. View and photograph them from permitted paved areas; never enter fields, including snow-covered ones, or block farm access. Around Furano, select particular flower gardens according to their current seasonal information. Official reference Official reference
Daisetsuzan
A mountain stay shifts the purpose of the trip. Decide whether you want scenery from visitor facilities or a properly prepared hiking programme. Conditions higher up can differ sharply from those in town. Check the relevant visitor centre and current restrictions; a valley forecast alone is not a mountain plan. Planning Your Stay
A city-and-countryside holiday can use Asahikawa plus a focused Biei or Furano chapter. Staying in the countryside makes sense when a slower morning and evening there are part of the appeal. For a mountain-led holiday, give the chosen mountain base dedicated nights instead of treating it as a compulsory extension to a flower itinerary.
Seasonal Considerations
Spring in town does not mean mountain trails are ready. Summer flower displays vary by garden and variety, so avoid treating all of the season as peak lavender time. Autumn changes earlier at higher elevations, but exact timing varies. Winter creates a different countryside and mountain holiday; summer walks and sightseeing combinations should not be assumed to work unchanged.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I see the countryside just by visiting the towns? The towns and the landscape sights are different parts of the trip. Choose your actual viewpoints and experiences before settling the practical plan.
Can I go straight from the airport to Biei or Furano? Yes. The Furano Bus Lavender stops at the airport and continues to Biei and Furano. It is a route bus that is not timed to flights, so check the timetable.
Should I include both Asahidake and Sounkyo? Only if the mountain region is a major focus and the trip has room for both. One well-chosen base is a reasonable starting point.
