Hokkaido Travel Guide: Choosing the Right Region for Your Trip
September 17, 2026

Hokkaido rewards a trip built around a region and a season. Choose the landscapes you want to spend time in, then decide where to stay. A city break, a mountain holiday and a journey through the eastern wetlands can all be Hokkaido trips, without needing to fit into the same itinerary.
Quick Overview
- Central Hokkaido: Sapporo, Otaru, Jozankei and Lake Shikotsu combine city life with contrasting waterside and hot-spring stays.
- Southern Hokkaido: Hakodate, Onuma and Matsumae put port history, lakes and a castle town at the centre of the trip.
- The interior: Asahikawa, Biei, Furano and Daisetsuzan suit a countryside or mountain focus.
- Eastern Hokkaido: Treat Tokachi, Kushiro and the Okhotsk coast as distinct areas, each deserving its own base.
- The far north: Wakkanai, Rishiri and Rebun belong in a separate northern chapter, not an incidental detour from Sapporo. Official reference
Understanding the Area
The airport-area guides below are editorial groupings for planning, not official boundaries or promises of easy access. New Chitose anchors our central-area guide; Hakodate covers the south; Asahikawa covers the interior; Obihiro, Kushiro and Memanbetsu introduce different parts of the east. These are not Hokkaido's only gateways.
Choosing Places and Bases
Cities, food and shorter outings
Start with Sapporo or Hakodate if evenings in town matter as much as sightseeing. Add a contrasting place rather than collecting similar stops: a port-town stay, an onsen retreat or a lakeside pause. Niseko, Lake Toya and Noboribetsu are further central-Hokkaido options; they are outside the narrower New Chitose guide in this series.
Countryside, mountains and the east
Choose Biei and Furano for an agricultural landscape, or a Daisetsuzan base for a mountain-led holiday. In the east, distinguish Tokachi's farming country from Kushiro's wetlands and the lakes of Akan-Mashu, and from Abashiri and Shiretoko on the Okhotsk side. Avoid treating all of eastern Hokkaido as one sightseeing neighbourhood. Official reference
Wakkanai, Rishiri and Rebun
The northern coast and islands deserve dedicated time. Build the trip around the island or walking experience you actually want, with spare room for weather. This series does not yet have a separate northern-area guide.
Planning Your Stay
For a short holiday, choose one main area and a complementary overnight stay. For a longer trip, connect neighbouring areas and change base when the focus changes. A city-and-lake trip can be complete in itself; there is no need to add Shiretoko merely because it appears on a Hokkaido highlights list. These are planning suggestions, not fixed itineraries.
Seasonal Considerations
Spring conditions differ between towns and higher ground. Summer is a natural starting point for countryside plans, but flower displays depend on location and timing. Autumn colour moves with elevation and weather. Winter calls for a different itinerary, with fewer outdoor commitments and room for disruption. Check the current information for each specific experience before booking around it.
Frequently Asked Questions
Should I stay in Sapporo for the whole trip? Only if your chosen sights fit a central-area holiday. A distant region usually deserves its own stay.
Should I choose an airport before choosing places? First decide which area matters most, then compare workable arrival and departure options. Flight and ground-transport details belong in the linked How-To and operator information.
