A holiday beginning at Hakodate Airport can focus on southern Hokkaido's port city, lakes and historic towns. Give Hakodate its own time, then choose whether the next chapter should be Onuma's landscape or the history of Matsumae and Esashi.

Getting from Hakodate Airport — Transport Information

There is no rail station at the airport. Buses leave from the terminal right outside the arrivals exit and reach central Hakodate in 20–40 minutes. For Onuma there is a direct bus from the airport; Matsumae and Esashi are longer journeys by route bus.

Connection details

  • Hakodate Station: The Teisan shuttle runs to match domestic flight arrivals and departures and is the quickest choice. Hakodate Bus route buses are cheaper on some routes and stop at more places along the way.
  • Goryokaku and Yunokawa: Hakodate Bus route 5 reaches the Goryokaku Tower stop in about 23 minutes (¥400), and the Yunokawa Onsen hot-spring area in about 9 minutes (¥300). Routes 7A/7B stop at Goryokaku Koen-iriguchi in 25–30 minutes (¥310).
  • Onuma by airport bus: Onuma Kotsu's Hakodate Airport–Onuma route bus (timetable from 1 April 2026) runs from the airport via Hakodate Onuma Prince Hotel to Onuma-Koen Station. It does not go to Hakodate Station. Check the timetable before you fly.
  • Onuma by rail: If you are already in Hakodate, JR trains run to Onuma-Koen Station. The limited express Hokuto stops there on most services but is all-reserved; buy a reserved-seat ticket before boarding.
  • Matsumae and Esashi: Hakodate Bus route buses serve both towns. For the Kikonai–Matsumae bus, see the Kikonai to Matsumae Route. Hakodate Bus sells a 2-day (¥6,300) and 3-day (¥8,500) Esashi–Matsumae free pass covering route buses in the area.

Public transport or a rental car?

Hakodate and Onuma are easy without a car. A car makes sense if you want to combine Matsumae and Esashi in one trip, because the towns are far apart and connections between them take planning. Buses can still work if you stay a night in each town.

Winter travel

Allow extra time for road delays on airport buses after snow, especially if you are connecting to a train at Shin-Hakodate-Hokuto. If you plan to drive, consider whether you are comfortable on snow and ice before choosing the car for the Matsumae and Esashi section.

Check current fares, timetables and service calendars before traveling. The Speed label marks the faster bus to Hakodate Station, not a guaranteed shortest journey for every destination.

Official Transport Information

Quick Overview

  • Hakodate: Waterfront streets, Motomachi, Goryokaku and the view from Mount Hakodate.
  • Onuma: Lakes and islands with Mount Komagatake in the landscape.
  • Matsumae: A castle-town setting and a spring blossom focus.
  • Esashi: A complementary historic port-town chapter for a longer southern trip.

Understanding the Area

Hakodate is the city anchor. Onuma lies inland, while Matsumae and Esashi extend the trip into other parts of the south. They are not neighbouring city attractions. Choose an extension deliberately and allow it its own space rather than attaching every place to a busy Hakodate day.

Main Places to Visit

Hakodate's contrasting neighbourhoods

Explore the waterfront and the slopes of Motomachi together, then give Goryokaku a separate place in the plan. The city's setting is part of its appeal: the view from Mount Hakodate helps put the streets and coast into perspective. Keep that view weather-dependent, so a cloudy evening does not undermine the whole stay. Official reference

Onuma

Onuma adds a landscape chapter to a city-led holiday. Its lakes, small islands and views toward Mount Komagatake provide a reason to slow down outdoors. Choose the lakeside experience you want before adding activities; an ambitious outdoor programme is not necessary to enjoy the setting. Official reference

Matsumae and Esashi

Matsumae suits travellers interested in the castle town and its historical setting. Esashi offers a different port-town perspective. Include one or both when southern history is a main interest, not simply to increase the number of places visited. Check the specific museums and historic sites you intend to enter. Planning Your Stay

For a compact break, stay in Hakodate and give the city a varied programme of streets, food and viewpoints. Add Onuma for a city-and-lake holiday. For a broader southern trip, consider an additional base around the historic towns after checking accommodation and opening arrangements. A change of base should give you time in a place, not just a different hotel each night.

Seasonal Considerations

Spring blossoms can be a reason to choose Matsumae or Goryokaku, but flowering is weather-dependent. Summer lends itself to combining town walks with Onuma. Autumn offers a different lakeside landscape. In winter, shorten outdoor walking blocks and check seasonal availability before building the trip around an activity. Clear night views cannot be guaranteed in any season. Official reference

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Onuma part of central Hakodate? No. Treat it as a separate destination, even if you choose to keep the same overnight base.

Should I add Matsumae and Esashi to a short city break? Only if they are priorities and you can give them enough time. Hakodate with Onuma is already a coherent southern-Hokkaido trip.
