Abashiri and Shiretoko: Exploring Hokkaido’s Okhotsk Coast
September 17, 2026

Memanbetsu Airport is a gateway for a holiday focused on Abashiri, the Okhotsk coast and the Shiretoko area. Give the coastal city and peninsula their own roles: a trip here is more rewarding when it has time for changing sea conditions and a carefully chosen nature experience.
Getting from Memanbetsu Airport — Transport Information
Memanbetsu Airport has no rail station. An airport bus meets every scheduled domestic arrival for Abashiri, and a direct seasonal bus runs to Utoro on the Shiretoko Peninsula. Outside that season, reach Utoro by train and local bus via Shiretoko-Shari.

Connection details
- Airport bus to Abashiri: The bus waits until all passengers have collected their bags. After some JAL flights from Sapporo Okadama, you take the bus that meets the next arriving flight instead. Tickets are sold online and at the airport. Change on board is available only for ¥1,000 notes. When the drift-ice sightseeing boat Aurora is operating, some buses continue to its terminal.
- Shiretoko Airport Liner: This direct bus departs at its scheduled time even if your flight is late, so leave a margin when choosing a flight. Between the end of the summer season (30 September 2026) and the start of the winter season (16 January 2027) it does not run. Tickets can be bought online in advance or locally.
- Train and bus via Shari: Take the JR Senmo Line from Abashiri to Shiretoko-Shari. Shari Bus Terminal is in front of the station. From November to late April, the Shiretoko Line runs from Shari to Utoro and the Shiretoko Nature Center. In the summer timetable (28 April–31 October 2026) some buses continue from Utoro to Shiretoko Five Lakes.
- Rausu side: Rausu is on the opposite side of the peninsula from Utoro. In Shari Bus's summer 2026 timetable, the Utoro–Rausu bus over the Shiretoko Pass was scheduled only from 1 July to 31 August. If Rausu is your main focus, compare flights to Nemuro-Nakashibetsu Airport, which is closer to the Rausu side.
Public transport or a rental car?
Abashiri works well without a car, and Utoro is reachable by bus. A rental car gives more freedom for Shiretoko's viewpoints and for combining the peninsula with the Akan-Mashu lakes. Check the official rules for individual sites, such as Shiretoko Five Lakes, before driving there.
Winter travel
Daylight is short and roads along the coast can be icy or affected by blowing snow. In winter the Shiretoko Line bus does not cross to Rausu; do not assume the mountain road between Utoro and Rausu is open. If you are not used to winter driving, use the Airport Liner or train and bus, and book drift-ice excursions with transport included where possible.
Check current fares, timetables and seasonal operating dates before traveling.

Quick Overview
- Abashiri: A coastal city base for Okhotsk scenery and regional history.
- The Okhotsk coast: Open coastal landscapes with a strongly seasonal character.
- Utoro: A base for the western side of the Shiretoko Peninsula.
- Shiretoko: Forest, lakes and coastal scenery with access rules that shape a visit.
Understanding the Area
Abashiri and Shiretoko are distinct parts of a regional trip, not adjacent city sights. Utoro and Rausu are on different sides of the peninsula. Utoro is the natural base when arriving from Memanbetsu; adding Rausu requires separate planning, including the current status of the crossing through the mountains.
Main Places to Visit
Abashiri
Give the city more than a transit role. The Abashiri Prison Museum offers a historical focus, but it is an open-air museum, not an entirely indoor weather alternative. For an indoor introduction to drift ice, consider the Okhotsk Ryu-hyo Museum. Check each museum's current visitor information. Official reference
The Okhotsk coast
Treat the sea as a landscape worth spending time with, not just the backdrop to one seasonal photograph. Winter drift ice is a reason some travellers choose this coast, but its presence and visibility vary. Build a stay that still interests you if the ice or a planned excursion is unavailable. Utoro and Shiretoko
An overnight base around Utoro makes sense when the peninsula is the main focus. Choose a particular walk, viewpoint or guided experience instead of assuming every natural site is freely accessible. At Shiretoko Five Lakes, the elevated boardwalk and ground-level trails have different arrangements. Check the official current rules, including closures and guide requirements, before committing to a visit. Never approach or feed wildlife. Official reference
Planning Your Stay
An Abashiri-led trip can emphasise the coast and history. A nature-led trip can give more nights to the Shiretoko side. Combining them works best when the change of base supports a genuine change of focus. A further extension toward the Akan-Mashu lakes belongs to a broader eastern-Hokkaido trip, with its own planning, rather than a spare stop at the end of a full day.
Seasonal Considerations
Spring openings and trail access require current checks. Summer and autumn offer different ways to experience the peninsula, with weather and wildlife restrictions still relevant. Winter is not the summer itinerary with snow added: coastal experiences, daylight and access differ. Confirm the year's drift-ice activities separately, and never assume the mountain crossing to Rausu is open. Official reference
Frequently Asked Questions
Is drift ice guaranteed during a winter visit? No. Choose dates using current local information and keep alternative plans that do not depend on seeing ice.
Does staying in Utoro give unrestricted access to Shiretoko? No. The base and the experience are separate decisions; individual places and activities have their own seasonal and conservation rules.
Can I reach Utoro by bus from the airport? In season, yes: the Shiretoko Airport Liner runs directly in about 130 minutes. At other times, go via Abashiri and Shiretoko-Shari by train and bus.
