Sapporo, Otaru and Lake Shikotsu: Exploring Central Hokkaido from New Chitose
September 17, 2026

Use New Chitose as the starting point for a central-Hokkaido holiday shaped around Sapporo, Otaru, Jozankei and Lake Shikotsu. This is a guide to the surrounding travel region: the airport name identifies a gateway, not a compact district beside the terminal.
Getting from New Chitose Airport — Transport Information
New Chitose Airport Station is directly below the terminal, so most visitors start with the JR Airport train. Sapporo Station is the hub for Otaru and for the bus to Jozankei. Lake Shikotsu is reached by a separate local bus from the airport.

Connection details
- JR Airport train: In the daytime (about 9:00–16:00) there are six trains an hour from the airport to Sapporo: one Special Rapid, three Rapid and two Semi-Rapid services. Most cars are non-reserved, and IC cards such as Suica can be used between the airport, Sapporo and Otaru. Car 4 is reserved (u-seat) and needs a reserved-seat ticket in addition to the fare.
- Continuing to Otaru: Not every train from Sapporo goes to Otaru. Trains bound for Teine or Hoshimi stop short, so check the destination board. IC cards cannot be used beyond Otaru toward Yoichi or Niseko.
- Going elsewhere by JR: For Noboribetsu or Hakodate, and for Tomamu, Obihiro or Kushiro, change at Minami-Chitose, the next station. Trains for different lines leave from the same platform there, so check the destination before boarding.
- Airport bus: The bus is useful if your hotel is on its route. The operator has announced that some time slots may be cancelled while it strengthens vehicle maintenance; check its service information on the day.
- Jozankei: On 20 October 2026 Hokuto Kotsu showed all services on its direct airport–Jozankei bus as suspended. Until it resumes, take the train to Sapporo and the Jotetsu Kappa Liner from Sapporo Station (stop 27). The Kappa Liner costs ¥1,700 (¥1,460 when booked online). Reservations open one month ahead and close at 17:00 the day before; you can board without one only if seats remain. Winter operating details are announced separately.
- Lake Shikotsu: The Shikotsuko Line (route 空4) runs from the airport via Chitose to the lake. Departures are limited, so plan your return before you go. The fare and departures above are from the summer 2026 timetable; check the winter timetable separately.
Public transport or a rental car?
Sapporo, Otaru and Jozankei work well without a car. Lake Shikotsu is possible by bus, but the small number of departures shapes the day; a car gives more freedom for lakeside stops and is worth considering if you plan to combine the lake with other places outside Sapporo.
Winter travel
Snow and ice change both walking and driving conditions. If you are not used to winter roads, rely on trains and buses for the main transfers. Leave extra time for road delays on airport and Jozankei buses, and check the day's service information before heading to a bus stop.
Check current fares, timetables and service status before traveling. The Speed label marks the faster rail option to Sapporo, not a guaranteed shortest journey for every trip.

Quick Overview
- Sapporo: City walks, food and evenings out.
- Otaru: A historic port landscape and canal-side warehouses.
- Jozankei: A hot-spring stay in a wooded valley within Sapporo's wider city area.
- Lake Shikotsu: A forested lake setting for a quieter part of the holiday.
Understanding the Area
These places sit in different directions and should be chosen for their contrasting character. Sapporo is a useful city base, but staying there does not make every attraction part of one convenient circuit. Niseko, Lake Toya and Noboribetsu need separate planning and are not covered here.
Main Places to Visit
Sapporo
Build a city day around Odori Park and the central neighbourhoods, then leave room for a meal and an evening around Susukino. Choose a museum or another indoor attraction as a weather alternative. Sapporo works best when the city itself has time in the itinerary, rather than serving only as a place to sleep between outings. Official reference
Otaru
The canal and warehouse streets provide a different sense of place from Sapporo's centre. Give the waterfront and surrounding streets a coherent part of the day instead of treating the canal as a single photograph. An overnight stay makes sense if the port-town atmosphere is one of the reasons for your trip. Official reference
Jozankei and Lake Shikotsu
Choose Jozankei when the stay itself should revolve around bathing and a valley setting. Choose Lake Shikotsu when you want the lake and surrounding forest to be the focus. They offer different settings; adding both is optional, not a requirement for a complete central-Hokkaido holiday. Official reference Official reference
Planning Your Stay
A city-led plan can combine Sapporo with Otaru. A slower plan can pair Sapporo with an overnight stay in Jozankei or at Lake Shikotsu. Decide whether the extra stay adds an experience you value before changing accommodation. For families or a short visit, keeping a free half-day can be more useful than adding another destination.
Seasonal Considerations
In spring, keep outdoor plans flexible while the landscape changes. Summer allows a stronger emphasis on parks and lakeside time; check the availability of any activity separately. Autumn is a reason to consider the wooded valley and lake areas, without promising a particular foliage date. Winter changes walking conditions and the amount you can comfortably fit into a day. Seasonal events need their own current-date check.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the easiest way from New Chitose Airport to Sapporo? The JR Airport train from the station beneath the terminal. It runs frequently in the daytime. The fastest trains take 33–43 minutes to Sapporo Station depending on the train type; check the time for the train you board.
Can I combine all the places in one outing? Do not plan on it. Choose an outing with a clear focus and check its practical arrangements separately; the destinations are not one continuous sightseeing district.
